From 9-13 October 2017, three FFN members – Sam Coggins; Chris Young; and, Yang-Ming Goh – headed over to Brussels, Belgium to participate in the Youth Ag Summit, which is hosted by our long standing partner, Bayer. Sam, Chris and Yang-Ming were the successful entrants to the essay competition that many of you will remember entering or hearing about at the end of 2016. They had their work cut out for them when they got to Brussels I can assure you! Accompanied by Lachlan Bird from Bayer, Bridgette Byrne who is a YAS Alumni and myself as mentors, they had a full on week brainstorming and planning for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The Summit was full of inspiring and realistic speakers talking on a whole range of topics related to agriculture across the globe, from succession to bee fertility, business planning to pasture productivity, world hunger to gender equality – and everything in between. In between the speakers, delegates were broken into working groups to tackle dedicated challenges…seeing cultures and backgrounds from across the world come together to discuss these things from their own perspectives is something to behold.

The biggest take away message for me personally is that we, here in Australia, are but one player in a global game, and it highlighted to me how insular we can become by not thinking broadly – both outside the box for our own businesses, but also by thinking outside the borders for what is impacting our markets, supplies, global farming colleagues and everything else that contributes to making our industry successful, and that will be ever as important to build it going forward.

This is a very short snapshot to give you all an update, we will hear from the other guys soon on some of their experiences through the social media channels and perhaps a ‘G’day you got a minute?’ or two! I feel extremely honoured and lucky to have gone on this trip with our delegates and must thank Bayer once again for being the fantastic partner they are with Future Farmers Network, and congratulate them on another fantastic YAS.

This meeting is to be held at:

Roma Cultural Centre (Ernest Brock Room), 18 Quentin Street, Roma, QLD, 4555.

  • FFN is calling for Director Nominations for a two-year term of appointment.
  • As per the FFN Constitution, a maximum of 11 Directors is permissible.
  • Under FFN’s terms of appointment, there are five (5) positions vacated at the 2017 AGM – three (3) Directors retire by rotation, two (2) will seek re-election.


  • Voting will be conducted in person in 2017.
  • All meeting material and voting information will be distributed 21 days prior to the AGM.
  • In person voting will be via AGM attendance at 4:45pm on Thursday 16 November 2017 at Roma Cultural Centre (Ernest Brock Room), 18 Quentin Street, Roma QLD, 4555.

In July 2017, Future Farmers Network conducted a survey among 800 young Australians working or studying in Agriculture. A key objective of FFN is to provide the ongoing national platform that provides a voice for agricultural youth across Australia. In support of this, FFN must understand the ever-changing issues and concerns for our members as well as the areas that need further support.

The objectives of the 2017 FFN Survey were to:

  • Define the FFN community and explore how they operate in the industry
  • Confirm the requirements of the FFN community are being adequately serviced by FFN
  • Capture the challenges faced by the FFN community and their attitude towards the government policies surrounding those concerns
  • Develop a program for Youth Ag Council (YAC) 2017 based on the survey results

The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire shared with the FFN community. The first part of the questionnaire dealt with demographics and FFN feedback, the second section was concerned with the current challenges and attitudes towards Australian agriculture.

Key take outs from the survey include:

  • The FFN Community are most interested in Career Path Advice, New Technology and Financial Literacy.
  • The highest ranked policy issues amongst young Australian agriculture professionals are Water & Natural Resource Management, Drought and Education.
  • Respondents were very keen to hear from a range of speakers in particular: Twiggy Forrest, Catherine Marriott, Anna Speer and Barnaby Joyce
  • Over 50% of respondents are sourcing their information online or through industry publications.

My fondest memories growing up revolved around food, happy times spent with my siblings climbing trees, camping in the bush, and eating mum’s home cooked meals, delicious experiments or growing our own vegetables and herbs.

The passion my mum has for food, has always been normal for us, and it seemed inevitable that one of us would want to join her on her journey. Being passionate about where our food comes from, how far it has travelled, how sustainably it can be sourced and supporting our local community of food producers has been our goal in business and in opening the Limestone Coast Pantry.

To guarantee the freshest & most nutrient dense food we can possibly source, we didn’t need to look very far, we have an abundance of local food producers on our doorstep from organic garlic, apples, eggs, vineyards, to the most fabulous wagyu beef, and organic grains grown an hour away from our premises. We live in an area of South East South Australia that is known for our fresh air, clean limestone filtered water and rich volcanic soil that all combine to produce some of the best quality and most delicious food in Australia.

I had the love and passion for locally sourced, meticulously showcased food, but needed the business skills to manage our new venture, which is what led me to Innovative Business Training (IBT). Starting a new business from scratch, I was time-poor, and needed a training solution that I could fit into my daily schedule, a course that would be able to teach me new operational and administrative skills along with business tools I could use at a pace that suited my needs and using methods I could easily grasp.

I was hesitant before beginning my course about how I would be able to study and succeed in regional South Australia without attending a training premises, but IBT offered flexibility with how I studied and the blended mode of delivery was perfect for the way I learn and my busy schedule. The personal mentoring was invaluable to me, and I was able to continue setting up our business, putting my newly learned skills to use straight away, with help and support only a phone call or email away. We were thrilled to welcome IBT Director, Wendy Tagliabue into the Limestone Coast Pantry for a work site visit where she offered relevant and welcomed advice on refining what I had been learning to directly relate it back to our business.

In my management role, I’m responsible for staff training which previously would have terrified me, but I’m surprised with just how effectively I have used my new skills learnt through IBT to provide training for our staff, and with a new-found confidence in my skills as a trainer, there’s no stopping me now in pursuing excellence both in our business and my personal life.

I love how up to date and relevant all the units of study are to our business, touching on everything from e-business tools, to finance, keeping records, workplace health and safety to sustainability and many more. I was so glad we chose IBT to deliver our business training.

Future Farmers Network and Grain Growers are excited to launch the first Innovation Generation (IG) Local in Moree, NSW, on 23rd February 2017 and you’re invited! 

Australia is a large country and invariably some people who may like to attend IG are prohibited from doing so by the tyranny of distance as well as the costs associated travelling this distance. To extend the reach of IG – the concept of bringing an abridged version of the conference to the regions, a new, across-commodity, across-industry initiative –was considered and culminated in IG Local.

IG Local is an initiative to bring the best of IG to your local community. The event will bring inspirational speakers to take part in an afternoon and evening of capacity building and networking amongst tomorrow’s up and coming Agricultural leaders. Topics and speakers include:

Where is the value in technology – John Alexander

John will question the value point or return on investment for technology – both Internet related and agronomic management.

Communication within and about our industry – Kathleen Allan

Kathleen will speak about the role we have within promoting the agricultural industry and how we can close the disconnect between customers and producers. 

The importance of mental health – Fiona Livingstone

Fiona is passionate about the health and wellbeing of rural communities and will speak about the Farm-Link project, a suicide prevention program.

Farm management – Finding solutions – Andrew Earle

Andrew will speak about his role within the industry and encourage you to think outside the box to solve a problem.

Panel Session

This panel will discuss local issues and find a unified way to solve them. John Alexander, Andrew Earle, Zara Lowein, Megan Davies and Susan McDonnell will sit on the panel.
