Our History
Founded in 2002 by Deb McLucas, the Future Farmers Network has had a strongly supported histroy in Australia's rural industries.
In November 2001 the founder of the Future Farmers Network, Deb McLucas, decided to do something about the widespread concern she had seen expressed for the future of young people in rural industry. Deb believes it is not a shortage of young people, but a shortage of opportunities for those people that is the major problem. With this in mind she decided to look into the idea of establishing a network to support young people who are pursuing a career in agriculture and the rural service industries.
A steering committee was formed and interested people were recruited to be involved in the development of the network. Then in March 2002 Deb was awarded the 2002 Elaine Brough Bursary of $5000 to establish the Future Farmers Network. The funds enabled her to develop a range of member services and the network was officially launched by The Minister for Primary Industries, Henry Palaszczuk August 2002.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive ever since. The network has a continually growing national membership.
The Future Farmers Network is a not-for-profit organisation, and is an incorporated company limited by guarantee. It sources funding from membership fees, donations, government funding and corporate sponsorship.
